THE SIMPLEST WAY I CAN DESCRIBE CHRISTIANITY
I like to imagine Jesus standing between two doorways He explains behind one door is one of eternal bliss where there is no more pain, suffering, or tears. Instead, it is a life filled with complete and utter joy. It’s a literal place called Heaven.
He goes on to explain behind the other door is one filled with eternal suffering beyond our comprehension where there is no hope of escape, and…this is a big ‘and,’ we deserve to go there. We have a debt we cannot pay to keep us out of there. It is also a literal place called Hell.
As we stand there speechless, He explains that He has already paid the price for you. You don’t have to go through that door.
Again, we stand there speechless. He says, “I love you so much that I went to Hell in your place so I could spend eternity with YOU. I paid your ransom. You mean that much to me.” At this point, we may get it together and ask what you have to do to repay Him.
And this is what He says. “Admit you have messed up. Ask me to forgive you and I will. All you have to do is trust me. Trust me that I have paid your debt. Trust that I am the only one who can save you from Hell…and I already did.”
All God wants is your heart. He wants you to freely choose Him. Hell is a place devoid of God for those who say, “No thanks,” to his outrageously generous offer. God is the ultimate gentlemen who will not force His way on anyone. When you say, “No thanks,” you say, “Yes,” to Hell.
You don’t earn your way to Heaven. No one can do that. And when a person completely grasps what Jesus has done for them, they cannot go on unchanged. Our deep, humble gratitude for what He has done for us….paid a debt that is impossible for us to pay….causes us to WANT to live a life for Him. He stepped in and did for us what we could not do for ourselves. Just. Because. He. Loves. Us.
It’s really that simple. Profound, but simple.
