I can do whatever I want
I have heard many, many kids say, “I’m 18. I can do whatever I want,” including my own amazing daughter. I’m sure I was the same way. I was fiercely independent too and while that has it’s perks, it can also have it’s downsides.
Let’s look at some ways it can be both good and not so good. Being independent often leads to being pretty successful, but it can also lead to being a loner. And you know what they say about lone rangers? Lone rangers are dead rangers. Keep trusted people close and ask for their advice. Then
Being independent can lead to crazy cool adventures, but it can also lead down a road you never thought you’d go. The “That will never happen to me” thought really does come back to bite you right in the
Being independent is fun. You get to make your own decisions. You get to go off and do a lot of cool things, but you can also hurt people along the way who feel like you left them in the dust.
Doing whatever you want really does affect those around you, both good and bad. As an independent teenager once myself I too overlooked how my nature might hurt others. The people who have stuck by us our whole lives and have proven their loyalty to us should be cared for and their feelings should serve as a check inside of us. “How will my decisions affect my mom, dad, sister, best friend, etc?”
And last but not least….you could end up homeless or in prison. Seriously. When I was young I have to be honest and admit I was an avid street racer. Like running from the cops street racer. Never once did I think about the possibility of going to prison if I had killed someone in the throws of my “winning is all that matters” mentality.
I’ve seen countless co-workers over the years make really bad financial decisions and then find themselves literally homeless. I’ve seen them make such bad decisions they lost their kids….and now their kids have to pick up the tab for that. I’ve seen numerous people get fired all in the name of “I can do whatever I want.” Freedom is great when we use it responsibly 🙂
Yes, you can do whatever you want….but should you?
