How to Measure Success…and it’s not what you think

September 23, 2019 by Teresa Leave a Comment

Success is relative. Your version of success can be much different from other people. It really depends on what you value. That is why it’s so important NOT to compare yourself to others because you don’t know what they value…and it really doesn’t matter. Your life is yours and what others are doing is really none of our business.

What Do You Value?

When you think about success and what you want to do with your life start with what you value. Sometimes a good way to determine that is to look at what you hate. What ticks you off about society? What is your way of fixing it? What do you see YOU CAN DO?

Values develop over the course of your life. Things you like develop too. This takes a lot of thought and trying new things. Take the time to think…a lot…and make a habit of it. It’s just one of the things that can keep you out of trouble and on the right track.

Comparison is the Greatest Stealer of Joy…so don’t do it

Comparing what your life looks like to someone else’s is often not helpful. You end up in two spots…either feeling better than them, aka: self-righteous or shame because they are doing better than you…or so you think. The problem with comparing is 1. you really never know the struggles of another person. Social media certainly doesn’t show that. 2. You don’t know what they gave up to get where they got and you may not have been willing to do what they had to do. 3. most importantly…we all value different things. What makes you feel successful and fulfilled may make me miserable and vise versa.

Focus on what your gifts and talents are. Focus on what you value. Focus on making things happen in your life. Don’t just sit there expecting success to find you. It takes a lot of hard work and perseverance, but that is what makes you a better person too. Stick with it and don’t give up. The only way you can fail is to quit.

Surround yourself with motivated people who want to see you succeed too.

You got this! -Teresa
