Some people…adults included…have horrible attitudes. Yet somehow they think things will work out just fine for them. I say, “won’t happen.” You may never know what you could have accomplished had you had a great attitude with the same goal.
Your method can hijack your motive
Years ago the girls and I watched a movie about a lady trying to save whales. Her motive was awesome. Her method sucked big time. She was a witch with a capital B. I can’t help but think she ruined her ability to get even more accomplished just because she was so difficult to work with.
Our attitudes color every single aspect of our life. When we allow our kids to have bad attitudes we are not doing them any favors. Yes, I know sometimes it takes an awful lot of energy to deal with it but guess what? That’s our job and the most important job we’ll ever have is being a parent.
We are their life coach and to be a good one we have to be a good example. Are you fun to live with? Do you have a great attitude when things are going so well? Do you follow the “If you can’t say something nice don’t say it at all?” If you say no to these you’re not alone. I’m right there with you at times and then I have to catch myself and say, “Wait a minute. If I want them to have a great attitude I need to show them how it’s done.”
Life is caught, not taught. I’ve said that for years and that may be another one of my sayings that drive them crazy. There are too many to count I think.
We can have the biggest hearts for our kids, but when we don’t convey that love very well that is not the message they receive. I’ve not done this well many times. I call these my “Mom of the year moments.” I think they could be made into a book of what not to do! LOL
The point is we all need to get that we have to make sure our method doesn’t ruin our motive. 🙂
Much love! -Teresa
