Have you ever tried to “fix” someone’s life? Have you ever been the “project” of someone else? A lot of people have done this to someone and while the heart behind it is often good, nine times out of ten it doesn’t work out so well.
People are like used cars
When you buy a used car what do you see on the sticker? “AS IS CONDITION.” This kind of goes along with some of my other sayings and I use it to attempt to drive home the point that we need to be able to look at people exactly how they are and ask ourselves, “If nothing changed would I be happy being in a relationship with this person the rest of my life? Are they good for me? Do I feel like a genius for being involved with this person?”
So many people fall in love with potential. It sound crazy to me as a 42-year-old but for some reason when I was a teenager it made perfect sense. We as parents need to drive this point clearly home for our kids and if you are a teenager reading this, don’t ignore this advice. It will save you a whole lot of heartache later!
