As people in general, we really want to be taken seriously. That seems to be human nature, so why doesn’t that happen sometimes?
Well, there can be a variety of reasons, but this one is a very common one: drama.
Adults hate drama. Men in particular, seem to hate drama. When teenagers get over the top when they are trying to communicate what often happens is adults either tune them out or they get into an argument. Either way, the teenager feels unheard and the adult usually feels worn out. Neither is good, right?
So what do you do instead? It’s very simple:
Talk much quieter
Talk much slower
Give the facts and the facts only when possible
When you have to interject feelings, make sure you are direct and to the point
Keep it short and simple
Do NOT exaggerate at all. When we exaggerate, no one trusts a thing we say. How we do one thing is how we do everything, so be accurate and give people the benefit of the doubt when you can.
In the video I tell a funny story about how my dad handled my drama as a kid 🙂
